I told my board you were a genius and I had no fear that the change over would go [sign in to see URL] least from their point of view.. emoticon

When I look at everything I have to say the changeover has gone very smoothly. The new host is not for the beginner because their support is very sporadic but if you have some experience and want speed they are outstanding. Personally speaking I would recommend either my old host or Lesigns if someone is just getting started at hosting their own site and need a lot of "hand holding" support.

Ya [sign in to see URL] is something that I just have a hard time wrapping my head around.
I mean I understand that THOR has the hardware and software and we just basically rent a space from him......
But how does one go about "having their own" hosted site?

I mean, I use Imagekind for hosting my photos that are for [sign in to see URL] Zazzle for hosting my calendars, but how would I have my own "Imagekind" like site.
I mean I can't use runboard to sell my [sign in to see URL] Thor owns the bandwidth I use.
How does one go about "owning" their own piece of the internet?

That probably makes no freaking sense, but I'm not sure how else to explain it.. emoticon

Re: January Chat

First you have to figure out what you want to do so you can get an idea of what the costs will be.

Thor uses "dedicated servers" which means he owns the hardware and software. That is by far the most expensive way to go and can easily run you 15-20 thousand dollars per year for a modest set-up.

Then you have "business hosting" where you may not own the hardware but your site is run off of servers that will normally have fewer than 5 other business' sharing the server (that is expensive as well going into the hundreds of dollars).

Next is "shared hosting." You do not own the hardware and you have to share the servers you are assigned with others. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you were with a fast hosting site and your own site is fairly small (traffic wise). The cost for this normally runs between $50-150 per year.

To actually be on the internet there is one other thing, you must have a domain name so people, browsers, and robots can actually find you. A lot of places have first year specials where you can get the domain name for $5 the first year (and some of them even have a "free domain name" for as long as you are hosting with them). The true cost though is about $15 per year for the name so that is what you have to plan on.

Putting the site together is almost like putting a Runboard together because you need to define the CSS and use HTML to show the pages. The biggest difference is that you have no pre-defined content which is what the message boards are. Looking at your imagelinks site I see you would also need to use javascript or maybe ajax and php to duplicate the pages functions. This isn't really hard but it can take a lot of time to set up (I paid Lesigner Girl to rework my It's The Bible site because of time constraints at my end and it took her every bit of eight hours... for me it would have been about 5-7 days because PHP is still a thing of puzzlement and it takes awhile for the solution to "click."

Whatever you do don't got with the lowest priced web designer for help. They may only charge $5-6 per hour but they are almost always using site creation software like DreamWeaver which is a royal mess when it comes to editing things later. Lesigner Girl may be more expensive but she is still cheaper than the larger companies and her work is every bit as good (or better) and she gives you this really nice "what is what and how to change it" tip sheet when the project is finished.

[sign in to see URL] for the explanation! I actually 'get it' now! emoticon
I honestly never knew how people got their own piece of the internet. I had heard of "domain names" but really never knew how one got one or even why one would want one. emoticon
Now I understand. I also understand that I need to get a whole lot better at the photography end before owning my own site would make any sense what-so-ever! emoticon
And I [sign in to see URL], someday I decide to try [sign in to see URL] will be the first person I talk too. emoticon

Thank you for your patience and explanations Pastor.. emoticon

Re:

Hi to all here. I have been really busy these last few months especially over the christmas period. Work has keeping me really busy and have a new position in which I have to co-ordinate personnel and job rotas.

Christmas came and went so fast I missed it !!

Was helping out with the homeless shelter as well as work and family throughout December. Volunteers were short on the ground and I couldn't sit back and watch them struggle even though I had family responsibilities to do as well.

Lucky for me I have an understanding family which didn't mind my absence and praised me for the hard work I put in, not only to the shelter staff but for the the kids as well to give them presents they wanted etc.

I shall endeavor to be a part of the Runboard Staff this year and hope to get back to some sort of normality. I hope my absence has not brought to much strain on the staff here but have been popping in now and again whilst at work to check up on things over at my board and the Directory and Support Forums whilst at work.

Hope to see more of you real soon
